Today
we traveled from the Teslin area to Skagway with a stop in Carcross. Not as many animals to view today. But the beauty just keeps on coming.
Our
stop in Carcross was refreshing. They are rebuilding in the little town. We
spent a few hours wondering around the town seeing what they had to offer.
There is a beautiful lake that was carved out by the glaciers. They have a
sandy beach there. The girls stuck their feet in the water to see how cold it
was (I think they really needed to wash them) to tell the truth.
The
surrounding mountains are still snow capped. We toured the train station and
the general store. The White Pass train stops in Carcross on its way to
Whitehorse every day. We departed Carcross
and decided to have lunch at a road stop overlooking Bove Island. It was a
sunny day and we enjoyed to scenery and to get ready for the steep roads ahead
to Skagway.
I mean steep!! We descend
from an elevation of 3,000 ft to sea level in 5 miles. Let me tell you folks,
it’s all downhill. During that decent we
had to stop at the US customs office because we were entering the big state of
Alaska. Back in the US of A.
Drop
that transmission into 3rd gear and let her ride. She’ll stop when she hits the bottom. We were
very excited to get to Skagway not because we made it down the hill unscathed,
but there is cell phone and internet service, something that we have not had
for 4 days. We knew that we wanted to
touch base with the family and the world for that matter. We do not know how the Rangers, Spurs or the
US Open stands. Is the world economy
still working? You really lose touch.
That’s not all bad. You realize how much time is wasted on things that you do
not have any control over. You begin to
see how you are being controlled by the media. Here you make your own news. You decide what's important and what’s not. It’s
refreshing to get back to the basics of life, when you were a little kid without
a care in the world. What’s for lunch is
the most important decision of the day.
